ARROWTOWN BRIDGE
The Arrowtown Twin Span Bridge Project was undertaken by Recreation Construction 2021 Ltd on behalf of the Queenstown Trails Trust, with completion in November 2023. This project was a critical component of the new Arrowtown Trail, designed to link Tucker Beach to Arthurs Point, enhancing accessibility for both pedestrians and cyclists along the Queenstown Trails network. The bridge was designed by Stantec, ensuring a structurally sound and well-integrated addition to the trail.
To ensure a durable and long-lasting structure, reinforced concrete abutments were installed at each end of the bridge. M3 Contracting, the trail contractors, assisted with excavating at the abutments to prepare the site. The steel bridge components were fabricated off-site by the Recreation Construction team, optimizing efficiency and ensuring quality control while minimizing the project's environmental impact. Once completed, the prefabricated sections were transported to the site, where a crane was used to precisely position the twin spans, ensuring a seamless and secure fit. The team then installed the timber decking and handrails, designed for durability and user comfort.
Several challenges were encountered throughout the project. Semi-remote site access required careful logistical planning to transport materials and complete the assembly efficiently. The prefabrication process ensured that all components aligned perfectly during installation, reducing on-site adjustments.
The Arrowtown Twin Span Bridge is now a key feature of the Arrowtown Trail, offering a safe and scenic route for trail users. The project was well-received by both the Queenstown Trails Trust and the local community, reflecting its success in improving connectivity and enhancing the outdoor experience.
