BOGROY BRIDGE

Location: Alps to Ocean Track, Lake Benmore
Project completed November 2020
Contracted by Waitaki District Council, Parks & Recreation Department

Tasked with installing a 22m steel bean bridge spanning between rocky outcrops, this project was on the Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail, around the side of lake Benmore section on Bog Roy Station.

The Recreation Construction team prefabricated the metal work for the bridge in our workshop over the winter period. Extensive site preparation of rock breaking and blasting to clear a line for the bridge occurred over the course of a week. Foundations were then set with reinforcing rods drilled in to the rock 4+ metres deep. Concrete, brought in by helicopter was poured to secure these.

With the complexity and remoteness of the site location, all materials had to either be delivered by boat or helicopter.

Each beam was brought in by helicopter in three sections, with them bolted together on the track before manoeuvring them in to place with a small excavator and the helicopter. Once the beams were in place and secured, with the use of safety lines, our team completed the build, piecing all sections together.

All helicopter work was carried out by the team at Heliventures. This collaboration helped us bring the project to completion smoothly.
