HOWDEN SHELTER
Recreation Construction 2021 Ltd was engaged to build a new shelter to replace the original Howden Hut, which was destroyed by a slip on the Routeburn Track in Fiordland National Park. A new location was identified across the river, ensuring a safer and more resilient site. The project involved constructing a durable, weather-resistant shelter and installing modern toilet facilities to support visitor use in this remote backcountry location.
The site preparation involved leveling and installing drainage to keep the area dry, using gravel flown in from the slip. Prefabrication of key components was done off-site to minimize environmental impact and expedite installation. Due to the remote location, all materials and tools were airlifted by helicopter, requiring precise logistics to optimize flight time and costs. Southern Lakes Helicopters handled all flying operations, ensuring efficient transport of materials and personnel. The shelter and toilet facilities were built with robust materials suited to Fiordland’s extreme conditions, incorporating eco-friendly systems to minimize environmental impact. Once construction was complete, the site was rehabilitated, ensuring erosion control and track realignment where necessary.
Challenges included managing remote access, which was mitigated through careful planning to minimize unnecessary trips and maximize efficiency. Harsh weather conditions required a flexible schedule to take advantage of favorable work windows. Environmental protection was a priority, with all work following DOC guidelines to prevent disruption to the natural surroundings.
The new Howden Shelter and toilet facilities provide a safe and comfortable rest stop for trampers. Completed on time and to high standards, the project received positive feedback from DOC and park users.
